5.55 lakh people included in food scheme in Delhi this month

More than 5.55 lakh people belonging to 1,64,259 families have been included as beneficiaries under the food security scheme this month, Delhi government today.

"These families will start receiving highly-subsidised food grains like rice at Rs 3 per kg and wheat at Rs 2 per kg from August after they get their beneficiary cards.

"The 5,55,325 people include 2,80,549 males, 2,74,739 females and 37 transgenders," said S S Yadav, Commissioner of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs.

Last month, 1.2 lakh families were added in the food security net. They have been issued ration cards this month which are being delivered to them by speed post.
 

Yadav said that till now 84,770 people have been added from central Delhi, 1,23,923 from east Delhi, 70,622 from New Delhi, 53,566 from north Delhi, 1,18,678 from northeast, 92,348 from northwest, 89,038 from south, 2,12,476 from south west and 1,25,346 from west in the food security net.

The Food Security Act has been implemented in two phases. In phase one, 32.25 lakh people having BPL, AAY, JRC, RCRC, APL (S) ration cards were brought under the food security net from September 1, 2013.

After that, applications were invited from other eligible households to provide the benefits. In response to this, the department has received 15,18,585 applications and 14,31,122 households have been verified in the field so far.

"The department has deployed over 1,500 people for physical verification of these applications. All those eligible will be provided food security in the next three months," Yadav added.
