5 dead, 12 injured in a truck-jeep collision

Five persons were killed and 12 others got injured when their jeep had a head-on collision with a truck near Shyam village, about 10 kms from here, police said today.

The incident took place last evening when the truck overtook a motorcycle and hit the jeep which was coming from the opposite direction, killing two persons on the spot, police said.

The injured were rushed to a hospital, they said, adding three of them later succumbed to their injuries.

The deceased have been identified as Bhanwar Singh (30), the jeep driver, Asha Devi (45), Padam Singh (40), Anita (45) and Md Ali (40), all the victims were travelling in the jeep.
 

The driver and cleaner of the truck fled the spot and are still absconding, police said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced an exgratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those injured in the accident.
