As many as five persons died and six were taken ill after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in Kewathiya village here, prompting Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to suspend three policemen.

The incident took place last night after the victims consumed toddy (local fermented brew from palm tree juice), police said today.

Taking strong exception to the incident, the chief minister ordered immediate suspension of police station incharge of Raunapar, SI incharge and beat constable.

He also ordered stern action against the excise department staff and issued directives to the department officials, DMs and SPs to carry out drives and ensure that such tragedies did not recur.
