5 die due to 'shock' over crop loss

Five persons, including a farmer's wife, died apparently of shock over crop losses due to unseasonal rains.

In Bareilly, 47-year-old farmer Hans Giri and his wife Pushpa (43) immolated themselves in Kashipur village last night. The couple died during treatment today, their family members said.

They committed suicide due to loss of crops and heavy debts, they claimed.

Additional Superintendent of Police Brijesh Srivastava said that the couple died due to burn injuries and an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reason behind the incident.

In Badaun, three farmers died in different areas of the district.

Additional District Magistrate R P Yadav said that teams of revenue deartment have been sent to the spot.
 

He said that post-mortem was being conducted and their families would be given benefit of insurance and other schemes.
