5 family members sentenced to life term in dowry death case

Five members of a family were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Bihar's Banka district in a 22 year old dowry death case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge J K Sinha passed the order convicting Pramod Jha (husband), his second wife Anita Devi, besides Pancha Devi (mother), Anil Jha (brother) and Mrityunjaya Jha (brother in-law) after finding them guilty in the murder case of Champa Devi, for dowry.

According to prosecution, the Jha family had poisoned Devi to death in Shubhka village under Rajaul police station area on November 3, 1991 after her family failed to meet their dowry demands.
 

They also dumped her body with an intention to destroy evidence.

The victim's brother Nandlal Jha had lodged a named FIR against the accused persons charging them with the murder of his sister.

The police had subsequently recovered charred body of the woman.
