5 held for gold, diamond theft

Five persons, including a juvenile, has been arrested for their alleged role in the theft of gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh that took place in South Delhi area on September 12, police said today.

According to the police, Divakar Malik (27), Bhaskar Malik (25), Baidhar Dass (39), Manju Lata (29) all residents of Balasore district of Orissa, along with the juvenile, were arrested from Kolkata by the Delhi Police following a tip-off.

Cops have recovered three stolen gold and diamond watches worth several lakh rupees and Rs 18.25 lakh cash from their possession.

As per police, one Ankoor Sahai, a resident of Saket had reported a theft case that took place at his house. Police lodged an FIR on his complaint and started the probe.
 

During the course of investigation, the police team learnt that the domestic help was involved in the theft.

Following this, a police team conducted a raid in Kolkata and apprehended the juvenile who was allegedly involved in the crime. Ankoor told police that the domestic help was employed last year but he was unaware about his being a juvenile.

At the instance of the juvenile, his other four accomplices were arrested.

During interrogation, they broke down and confessed their involvement in the theft, police said.

"The gang used to work as domestic helps in Delhi and committed thefts on getting suitable opportunity," said a police official.
