5 injured in clash over panchayat control

Five persons were injured in a clash between two groups over tabling no-confidence motion at a gram panchayat at Basanti in South 24 Parganas district today.

A senior police officer said trouble broke out after voting following the tabling of no-confidence motion resulted in six-six tie in the 12-member gram panchayat, with RSP and CPI(M) securing six votes.

The panchayat had been under Trinamool Congress control but recently the left moved no-confidence motion claiming two from TMC had moved over to their side.

The officer said after today's results were known, a group rannscked few houses and a clash broke out.
 

Six persons were injured, two of them from SUCI (Communist).

A police picket has been posted in the area.
