5 killed, 6 hurt as train hits van carrying marriage party

At least five persons were killed and six others injured when a van carrying a marriage party was hit by a passenger train at an unmanned railway crossing near Maigalganj area today.

"A van carrying about a dozen 'baratis' from Jamuniha to Shahjahanpur was hit by the Sitapur-bound train at around 9.30 am at an unmanned crossing near Rahjania village," Superintendent of Police Arvind Sen said.

While crossing the unmanned railway track near Rahjania village, the van driver failed to notice the train coming on the track and it was badly hit, he added.

Five persons were killed in the accident, the SP said, adding, though there were reports of six deaths, it was yet to be confirmed.
 

The six injured have been admitted to Sitapur District hospital, he said, adding, Northern Railway authorities have been informed.
