5 killed, 9 injured as truck hits tractor

Five persons were killed and nine others injured, four of them critically, when a speeding lorry hit a stationary tractor following which it fell into a 25-feet gorge in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh this evening, police said.

The incident occurred around 6 pm in a ghat section under Dhone sub-division, they said.

"The truck hit the stationary stone-laden tractor from the back side. Due to the impact, the tractor fell into a 25-feet gorge. Four persons sitting atop the stones, died on the spot, while one more died on way to hospital," Deputy Superintendent of Police P N Babu told PTI over phone.
 

Nine others were also injured in the mishap. Four of them are in a serious condition. All the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.

The victims worked at a cement factory, the DSP, who is supervising the rescue and relief operation, said, adding, the matter is being investigated.
