Five labourers were buried alive on the outskirts of the city when the wall of a place of worship, beside which they were asleep, collapsed following heavy rainfall, police said here today.

"The incident took place in Kohni village falling under Jhusi police station area of the district's trans-Yamuna region.

"The five persons had attached a plastic awning to a dilapidated wall of an Eidgah under which they used to sleep at night", said Dinesh Sah, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Circle Officer in-charge of Jhusi police station.

He said repair work was underway at the Eidgah which was very old and decrepit and the deceased were daily wage labourers engaged in the work.

"Heavy rains have been lashing the area since last evening and the wall appears to have collapsed late last night or in the early hours of today. People noticed the bodies, buried under the debris, this morning," the DSP said.
