The collision between a truck and a Bolero occurred at Jorapool on the Khunti-Ranchi road, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar said.
Four died on the spot while one succumbed to injuries on way to hospital, he said.
All the victims were occupants of the car, which was travelling to Lapung from Ranchi.
