At least five militants and two Afghan security officials were killed today when militants attacked a border post on the Pak-Afghan border in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region.
The five militants were killed as both Pakistani and Afghan forces responded to the attack on Afghan security forces on a border post in Arandu, Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Dawn news reported.
Acting District police chief of Chitral Muhammad Khalid said that two Pakistani civilians including a woman and two security officials were injured in the attack.
Khyber Agency is one of Pakistan's seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in the area, where Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants are active and fighting a counter-terrorism operation by Pakistan Army 'Khyber-1'.
Pakistan's northwest tribal region, infested with insurgency, has been the hotbed of military operations aimed at clearing out the region from homegrown and foreign rebels.
Khyber-I was launched in the region in October after reports suggested that militants escaping another such operation, named Zarb-i-Azb, in North Waziristan were taking refuge in the mountainous Tirah Valley of Khyber.
