5 militants arrested in Meghalaya; cash and arms seized

Five militants were arrested early today while they were on their way to purchase arms from gun runners in neighbouring Assam, police said.

Acting on specific information on the movement of A'chik Songna An'pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militants in north Garo Hills district, special police teams conducted checks on vehicles travelling towards Assam, they said.

Around 2 AM, a car with Assam registration number carrying five occupants was intercepted at Soksan tri-junction, 3 km away from Mendipathar police station, SP J F K Marak told PTI.

He said during the checking of the car, cash amounting to Rs 1,40,150 was seized along with five mobile phones, incriminating documents and IDs.
 

During interrogation the five arrested men admitted to have been going towards Assam border for purchasing AK ammunition and 9mm pistol from unknown gun runners, the SP said.

Interrogation is on to identify gun runners in Assam and police in neighbouring Goalpara district have also been informed in this regard, he said.

The militants were identified as Doma Ch. Momin, Salbong M Sangma both from Dakopgre village, Rakesh Ch. Marak of Damalgre village, Thailand R Marak of Nikwatgre village in west Garo Hills district and Onimesh D Sangma from Chokpot in south Garo Hills district, police said.
