Five members of a family, including a nine-day old infant, were trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam's Biswanath Chariali district bordering Arunachal Pradesh, a forest official said.

The six-member family were sleeping inside their hut last night when the jumbo, coming from nearby Behali Reserve Forest, attacked their house and trampled to death five members while a three-year old managed to escape at Thandapani in Behmari panchyat under Behali police station area.

The deceased have been identified as 35-year old Maji Murmu, his wife Suny Kimbu, their 10-year old daughter Lakhi Murmu, four-year old Mohagini Murmu and the family's nine-day old child, the official said.

Their three old daughter was saved by the villagers, the official added.

The police reached the spot this morning and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

The All Adivasi Student Association (AASA) and AATSA today blocked the National Highway at Behali for one hour to protest against the forest department's 'failure' to protect the villages.
