Security officials in Yemen say four soldiers and an army officer have been killed in an attack on a military post in northern Yemen.
Gunmen launched the attack today with bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns in the el Wadi district near the oil fields in Hadramawt province. Officials say five people were wounded.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack, though al-Qaida's local branch has launched assaults there before. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists.
Late yesterday, Yemen's al-Qaida branch claimed responsibility for a deadly attack this week that killed seven at an army complex in the southern port city of Aden, saying it was meant to "destroy the joint operations room for US drones" operating in the country.
