Five youths drowned in Yamuna river when they were taking a bath after playing Holi in north Delhi's Sonia Vihar today, police and fire officials said.

The incident took place in the late afternoon with the deceased having been identified as Dheeraj, Robin, Yogesh (all 23 years), Suresh (24) and Parveen (25).

One of their friends informed police but it was too late by the time help arrived.

"We got a call at 4:20 P.M. After which a rescue team reached the spot.

"The five youths were rushed to GTB Hospital where they were declared dead," a fire official said.

According to eyewitnesses, the youths had consumed alcohol on the banks of the river and were in an inebriated state when they took the fatal plunge.
