As many as 51 miners at the Jeetpur coalmines of the Steel Authority of India got trapped there today due to power failure and were rescued after seven hours.

The miners were brought up from the underground mine, which is about 30 km from here, after getting power from Tata collieries Jharia division of Tata Steel, colliery general manager J K Bhowmik said.

All the miners are safe and healthy, he said, adding that the mining in the colliery has, however, been suspended until alternative power arrangements are made.

Damodar Valley Corporation supplies power to the Jeetpur mines from its Pataldih feeder, which failed at 5 AM, plunging the mine into darkness, Bhowmik said.

This left the 51 miners trapped and though the night shift ended at 8 AM, they had to wait till 11.30 AM when the authorities connected the power line with that of Tata collieries and brought them overground, he added.
