At least 53 people suffering from diarrhoea, including 35 children and 11 women were admitted to Kanaklata Civil Hospital in Tezpur, district administration officials said today.

People of different age groups from Gotlong village under Mahabhairab police out post of Tezpur Police Station were admitted to the hospital since last night, they said.

District Surveillance officer Sonitpur Dr Durlav Saikia said all patients were suffering from acute diarrhoea.

Suspecting that contamination of water might be one of the main cause of the diarrhoea, Dr Saikia said it might also be a case of food poisoning and samples of their food have been sent for laboratory test.

Following a visit to the village, he said the Public Health Department has already provided safe drinking water to the affected and nearby areas with the administration taking every possible measure to prevent further spread of the disease.
