54 candidates in fray for last phase of LS polls in Assam

Altogether 54 candidates are in the fray for four parliamentary constituencies that are going to polls in the third and final phase in Assam, an election official said.

Five candidates - two each from Dhubri and Gauhati and one from Barpeta -pulled out of the race on Monday, the last day for nomination withdrawal for the final phase of polls in the state, he said.

There was no withdrawal of candidature in Kokrajhar (ST) seat, the official added.

In Gauhati, Independent Pranab Jyoti Das and Rashtriya Jansambhavna Party's Ranvijay Kumar Rai withdrew their nominations in the morning, leaving 17 candidates in the fray - the highest among the five seats that go to polls on April 23.

 

Prominent among them are Queen Oja of the BJP and Ranvijay Kumar Rai of the Congress.

In Dhubri, 15 candidates are contesting the elections. Two Independent nominees Asrof Ali and Selina Sultana withdrew their papers.

The seat will witness All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MP and party chief Badruddin Ajmal locking horns with Zabed Islam of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Abu Taher Bepari of the Congress.

In Barpeta, Independent candidate Saifur Rahman pulled out of the contest. A total of 13 candidates are fighting the polls from the constituency, prominent among them being Abdul Khaleque of the Congress, Kumar Deepak Das of the AGP and Rafiqul Islam of AIUDF.

In Kokrajhar(ST) constituency, nine candidates in the fray, including sitting Independent MP Naba Kumar Sarania, State Social Welfare Minister and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) candidate Pramila Rani Brahma of the BPF and Congress nominee Sabda Rabha.

A total of 74,07,824 electorate - 37,83,727 males, 36,23,933 females and 164 of the third gender - are set to exercise their franchise in the final phase.
