A police head constable shot himself dead under the Vijayawada police commissionerate area today but the reason for the act remained a mystery.

A senior police official said David Raju (55), posted as Station Writer at Gannavaram police station for the last one year, shot himself with a service weapon this afternoon at a private property at nearby Purushottapatnam village.

"As a Station Writer, Raju was in charge of weapons in the police station. He reported for duty as usual this morning. Shortly thereafter, he took a revolver and went out on his scooter.

"Later we received information that he was found dead," the police official said.

Though a suicide note was said to have been recovered from Raju's person, police remained tight-lipped about its contents.

The head constable's family members, who rushed to the scene from his native village, told the police that Raju did not have any financial problems or family issues.

Further probe is on.
