Suspected robbers murdered a 55-year- old woman at her residence here and made off with cash and valuables worth Rs 1 lakh, police said today.

According to police, the victim, identified as Asha, the wife of local businessman Devendra Raheja, was last night stabbed to death with a screwdriver by unknown assailants at her Govindnagar resident. The likely murder weapon, smeared with blood, was found lying next to the body.

Prima facie evidence suggests robbery was the motive for the crime as the almirah in the victim's house had been ransacked by the assailants, police said. Valuables and cash worth Rs 1 lakh are missing from the house, they added.

The murder came to light when one of the victim's daughters came to check on her mother after phone calls to her went unanswered.

The victim's husband said he suspects some vegetable vendor or somebody close to the family was behind the murder.
