Maharashtra Government today told the Legislative Assembly that 6,770 posts in the Police Department, ranging from Assistant Sub-inspector to Additional DG rank are lying vacant in the state.

The process of filling the posts is on with direct recruitment and promotions, the government said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis admitted in a written reply in the Assembly that due to the shortage of personnel, the police force is facing tremendous burden to handle intelligence inputs, growing incidence of crime and security of women.

To another question about illegal parking by Parag Alavani (BJP), Fadnavis admitted that due to high parking fees around the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, tourist vehicles are parked illegally on the roads in Vile Parle (East).

The Chief Minister said penalty is levied as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

However, Alavani said the penalty of Rs 100 is too less an amount compared to the parking fees in the airport area.

Stating that rising incidents of thefts in Vile Parle East has scared the residents, Alavani said instead of only levying a penalty of Rs 100, police should take stern action against the illegal parking to prevent any serious situation.

In reply to NCP leader Ajit Pawar, Fadnavis said no decision has been taken to shift government and political offices for the proposed Vidhan Bhavan metro station and more than 200 chawls for Girgaum metro station.

It is proposed to hold talks with the Girgaum residents for rehabilitation and also shifting of political and government buildings, he said, adding that the the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has plans to rehabilitate private buildings, party offices and government offices to nearby buildings on lease and discussions are on.
