About 200 villagers, including farmers, attacked government officials and tried to burn their vehicles while pelting stones on them, Patiala Additional Deputy Commissioner Anindita Mitra said.

The district revenue officials had gone to Charson and Balbehra villages as per recent orders by the High Court to take back possession of the government land.

Some of them also opened fire to prevent them from taking the land, she said, adding that the police, who used tear gas with "restraint" and canecharged, retaliated by firing in the air to disperse the mob.

"We have video-graphed the event and would register a case against them," she said.

The injured have been admitted to Rajindra Hospital, she said.

Meanwhile, State Committee of BKU Ekta (Dakaunda) charged the Patiala administration of unleashing an oppressive attitude towards the farmers.
