Six persons have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a man and demanding Rs 25 lakh from him, police said today.

A police complaint was filed on May 3 by a man alleging that he came into contact with a girl on Facebook last month.

The girl shared her mobile number and invited him to chat through WhatsApp, said Deputy Commisisoner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad.

On April 10, they planned a lunch at the Cross River Mall. When he reached there, she called him to an eating joint in Geeta Colony.

When he reached there in his car, as many as 10 persons came and started thrashing him, said the officer.

They took him to a room in Laxmi Nagar area and robbed him of his chain, bracelet, ring and driving licence, she said.

They demanded Rs 25 lakh as extortion money but when he said he couldn't pay such a high amount, they again manhandled him. He somehow managed to give them Rs 1.5 lakh.

They demanded more money and in order to save himself, he took them to his uncle's residence in Pushpanjali. He called his aunt who handed over Rs 2.5 lakh to one of the accused.

However, the accused kept on threatening him by saying that they would leak his personal chats, police said.

Upset with the threats, he approached police.

The Facebook chats and WhatsApp messages were analysed and the mobile numbers of the accused were put on surveillance and the six accused were arrested.

One of the accused had asked his wife to chat with the victim and befriend him. Police recovered the robbed items and Rs 3 lakh from them.
