Six members of a gang were arrested as they were trying to free their leader and infamous gangster Udham Singh Karnawal when he was being taken to Ghaziabad court today.

UP STF arrested six members of Udham Singh's gang, including his wife Geeta alias Geetanjali, from near Ramraj police chowki barrier in Meerut district as their SUV tried to follow the vehicle carrying Singh to court, SSP STF, Amit Pathak said.

Singh is a dangerous gangster in western Uttar Pradesh with 47 criminal cases, including 14 of murder, against him and a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head, Pathak said.

The arrested gang members told police that since Singh was not getting bail, they had planned to free him while he was being taken to Ghaziabad court from Bijnore jail where he is currently lodged, the SSP said.

They were also apprehensive that Singh may be attacked by Yogesh Bhadauda gang, who had attacked him earlier also in police custody, the officer said, adding that firearms and mobile phones were recovered from those arrested.
