Six militants were killed when Pakistani troops shelled rebel positions in the lawless Khyber tribal region today after two paramilitary troopers died in a blast near a check post in the country's northwest.

The forces targeted militant positions in Akakhel area in Khyber Agency bordering Afghanistan, killing six militants and injuring five others, security sources said.

Earlier in the day, two personnel were killed when Frontier Corps troops were attacked with an IED in the same area.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Several banned organisations, including the Taliban, are active in Khyber Agency and the army recently carried out an operation in the region to flush out militants who had captured strategic heights.
