Six persons launched an indefinite hunger strike in Nadia district on Monday claiming that they had been selected in Group D posts in the panchayat department around a year ago, but they were yet to get appointment letters.

The six were among a group of 132 people who had held a sit-in demonstration for six days from Tuesday last week with the same demand.

"After the written test and viva were completed, the result was published on August 2 last year. But we are yet to get the appointment letter," said Rituparna Bose, one of the agitators.

Bose said they were tired of getting assurances for the past one year and now the hunger strike will continue till they get their appointment letters.

"The case has been cleared from the district level and the panchayat department. It has now been pending in the finance department and we have informed them about it," Nadia Zilla Parishad Savadhipati Rikta Kundu said.

Kundu claimed their agitation is politically motivated.
