A six-year-old girl died after falling off a horse during a joyride in South Mumbai, police said today.

The tragic incident occurred yesterday at 4 pm at the Cooperage Ghoda Garden in Colaba, a place popular for horse joyrides for the last four decades, Manojkumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said.

The horse handler has been arrested.

The girl, Janhavi Mahendra Mistri, a KG student, had come to the garden with her parents. She took a horse ride, which ended in a tragedy when she was thrown off and fell between the legs of the animal, an official said.

She suffered severe injuries to the head and other parts of the body. Her parents rushed her to Bombay Hospital, where she succumbed late last night due to internal head injuries and bleeding, he said.

Janhavi's parents stay at Khetwadi-Girgaum in South Mumbai and her father Mahendra Mistri is CEO of a private firm, the official said.

The Colaba police have registered an offence against the horse handler, Sohan Chhotu Jaiswal, and arrested him.

The 30-year-old, a resident of Cuffe Parade, has been booked under the IPC section 304 (II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), said Vijay Dhopavkar, senior inspector of the Colaba Police Station.
