600 SDPI workers arrested in C'tore, Madurai for liquor stir

About 500 activists of Socialist Democratic Party of India were arrested today at various places in the district when they attempted to lock state run Tasmac liquor outlets.

The workers gathered in front of liquor outlets in Sundarapuram, Ukkadam and Selvapuram areas here and attempted to down the shutters and lock the shops, police said

The activists were also arrested from Mettupalayam and Thudiyalur on the outskirts of the city

A Madurai report said 100 SDPI members were arrested from two areas in the city when they picketed liquor shops and held a demonstration, pouring liquor onto the road.

SDPI state general secretary Abdul Hameed spoke of the evil effects of liquor and how it ruins society.
 

In melur 25 SDPI activists were arrested for blocking the liquor shop and demanding closure of all liquor shops and implementation of prohibition.
