Almost 90 per cent MPs have so far not adopted a village in phase-II of the Center's flagship scheme Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), Parliament was informed today.
The goal of SAGY is that each Member of Parliament should develop three Adarsh Gram (model village) by March 2019, of which one would be achieved by 2016, Minister of State for Rural Development Ram Kripal Yadav said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
In phase-I, 94 MPs and in phase-II 691 MPs are yet to adopt a village under SAGY, Yadav said in the reply.
SAGY is primarily about unleashing the power of people who are expected to inculcate pride in village, encourage societal and behavioural change, take collective responsibility and initiate public projects.
The development of gram panchayats identified under SAGY is intended to take place through the convergence and implementation of existing government schemes and programmes without allocating additional funds.
As per an official data, besides Prime Minister Narendra, who had announced the initiative during his first independence day speech, only eight ministers have adopted a village in the second phase.
All 795 MPs, including 543 from Lok Sabha and 252 from Rajya Sabha, are to develop three villages each by 2019.
