7,674 suicides, 26,378 accidental deaths in six metros in 2011

These figures have been compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), he said in a written reply.

While Chennai recoded the maximum number of 2,438 suicides in 2011, Delhi followed with 1,385 such incidents. Kolkata fared best with only 268 such cases.

The number of accidental deaths showed that the highest number of such cases - 7814 - took place in Mumbai, followed by the National Capital which saw 7,576 such incidents.

Kolkata again performed better with only 858 cases of accidental deaths.

Delhi also recorded 543 murders and 562 robberies. Figures related to murders and robberies in other metro cities were not available.
