7 arrested in clash between police and villagers

Seven people were arrested following a clash between police and a group of villagers over the arrest of a person in Pahariya village in the district, police said today.

Police had yesterday gone to the village to arrest Bilak Ram, who is wanted in a case of cheating, they said.

A group villagers were trying to save Ram from being taken into custody following which the clash took place and police fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd, they said.

However, the villagers alleged that police was beating the accused and when the villagers tried to save him the clash occurred.
 

A senior police official was injured along with three other villagers in the clash, police said, adding that the injured were later admitted to a local hospital.

An FIR has been registered against 59 people and so far seven people, including Ram, have been arrested in the matter, they said.

An enquiry has also been ordered in the matter and investigations are on, they said.
