At least seven people were killed and 18 injured when a fire broke out in a 22-storey building in suburban Powai this evening, police said.

P S Rahangdale, chief PRO, fire service, told PTI that information about the fire was received at 5.32 pm and fire brigade teams reached the Lake Home building in Chandivali within ten-fifteen minutes.

While the fire brigade personnel rescued over 20 people, five of them from a flat which was engulfed in flames, seven persons died. The fire spread up from the 14th floor.

Rahangdale said that four bodies were found inside a stalled lift. "This is time for awareness. Nobody should use lift during fire," he said, recalling a similar tragedy elsewhere in the city in the recent past.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Pradip Sonawane earlier told PTI that 18 were injured. According to Rahangdale, five of them were discharged, while 13 were still in the hospital.

One of the fire brigade jawans too suffered minor injuries.

The fire has been brought under control by late evening.
