At least seven persons were injured in a clash between supporters of the ruling BJP and opposition CPI(M) here, police said today.

The incident took place after the vehicle of SFI state president Nilanjana Ray hit a BJP Mahila Morcha leader at Jogendranagar area last night, AIG (police Control) Smriti Ranjan Das said.

Students Federation of India (SFI) is the students' wing of the CPI(M).

Seven persons were injured in the clash and the police had to resort to baton charge to control the situation, he said.

The BJP and the CPI(M) accused each other of assault at Jogendranagar.

The ruling party lodged an FIR accusing Ray and two others of attempting to murder BJP Mahila Morcha activists.

"Party workers were attacked when they were campaigning door to door about centrally sponsored schemes and the state government's achievements," state Mahila Morcha president Papia Dutta alleged.

Four persons were injured when Ray's car hit them, she said.

The CPI(M), on the other hand, alleged that Mahila Morcha activists attacked the house of Ray and her family members, in which her elderly mother and she were injured.

On their way to hospital, Ray's vehicle came under attack of BJP workers, CPI(M) secretary Bijan Dhar alleged and demanded action against the culprits.

Dhar also alleged that the body of Pradip Debbarma, the party's local leader in West Tripura district, was found in a rivulet at Jirania sub-division of the district yesterday.

Dhar alleged that BJP backed goons killed Debbarma who had fled from his house following threats by the BJP-RSS workers after the assembly elections results were announced on March 3 and the BJP-IPFT combine came to power ending 25 years' of rule of the CPI(M) led Left Front.

The police, however, said preliminary investigation suggested that Debbarma died in a motorcycle accident.
