At least seven persons were killed and 23 others injured today in an 11-vehicle pile-up in northern Egypts's Gharbia Governorate.
The fatal accident happened on the Cairo-Alexandria road near Tanta city, about 94 kilometres north of the capital Cairo.
The 23 injured persons were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, a health ministry official said adding that the bodies of the seven killed too have been moved to hospital.
Egypt has one of the world's highest traffic accident rates due to careless driving and poor road and vehicle conditions.
A recent report by Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics said there were 15,578 car accidents in Egypt in 2013, up by 0.4 per cent from the year before, in which 6,716 people died and 22,411 others were injured.
The accident was latest in a series of deadly accidents in the country in recent months.
In August, 38 people were killed and 41 others injured when two tourist buses collided near Sharm El-Sheikh resort in South Sinai.
