7 nominations for third phase rejected

Altogether seven nominations, of the 86 filed, have been rejected today during scrutiny for the six parliamentary constituencies in the third and final phase polling in Assam scheduled on April 24.

Three nominations were cancelled in Dhubri, two in Kokrajhar and one each in Guwahati and Nowgong, election office sources said here.

There are now 79 contestants in the fray with 20 in Gauhati, 15 each in Dhubri and Barpeta, 13 in Mangaldoi, nine in Nowgong and seven in Kokrajhar.

The last date of withdrawal for third phase was April 9.

Prominent candidates who have filed their nominations for the third phase are sitting BJP MPs Bijoya Chakravarty from Gauhati, Rajen Gohain from Nowgong and Ramen Deka from Mangaldoi, AIUDF'S Badruddin Ajmal from Dhubri, Congress MP Ismail Hussain from Barpeta and Kokrajhar's sitting MP S K Bwiuswmuthiary as an independent after being denied ticket by Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) which nominated state Transport Minister Chandan Brahma.
 

Other prominent candidates are former Meghalaya Governor R S Mooshahary from Kokrajhar and former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed's son Parvez Ali Ahmed from Barpeta, both on Trinamool Congress' tickets, former AGP MP and Union in Minister Birendra Prasad Baishya from Gauhati, former Congress MP Kirip Chaliha from Mangaldoi, former AGP heavyweight Chandramohan Patowary, contesting on a BJP ticket from Barpeta and AGP's working President Phani Bhushan Choudhury, also from Barpeta.
