7 red sander 'smugglers' held; vehicles, 30 logs seized

Police today arrested seven alleged smugglers and seized 30 red sander logs besides three vehicles from them in two separate incidents near here.

The arrests and seizures were made this morning near Kamalapuram on Ballari-Tirupathi highway and at Sugali Bidiki on Kurnool-Chittoor National Highway, said Kadapa district Superintendent of Police G Ashok Kumar.

Talking to media persons here, he said based on specific inputs, a Special Task Force team chased and nabbed Amarendra Raju, D V S Prasad and N Venkataramana, all suspected red sander smugglers, and seized a Scorpio car and 20 logs of the precious wood.

Based on the information given by the trio, four more smugglers - one of them hailing from Kolar district of adjoining Karnataka - were arrested and two vehicles and ten sandalwood logs seized, Kumar said.
