Masked robbers looted 7 to 8 kg of gold jewellery worth crores of rupees from a well known shop in the heart of Guwahati this evening, police said.

A gang of four robbers walked into the shop on busy Srimanta Sankar Dev Path shortly after 7 PM and ordered employees and customers to move to one side.

They fired in the air thrice from a pistol to scare the people inside the shop, showroom manager Rajiv said.

The gang members broke the display counters with hammers, took out the jewellery and put them in bags before going out easily as the security guard was absent today.

A car was probably waiting for them outside the shop, Dev said adding that the looting was complete within five to seven minutes.

Police Commissioner Hiren Nath said that the shop authorities informed him that the regular security guard of the shop had taken leave today as he was not well.
