70 elephants visit Gunderipallam reservoir for water

: Faced with dwindling water sources, a herd of 70 elephants today visited Gundripallam reservoir in Sathyamangalam area to quench their thirst, forest officials said.

They said the severe summer in the plains and forest areas have created a lot of problems to people and also wildlife. though the Sathyamangalam forest division had arranged for filling a number of water tubs for the animals, especially for elephants, there was still water scarcity, they said.

Often the pachyderms enter agricultural lands adjacent to the forest area for water and food, damaging standing crop, especially banana.

Last evening too some elephants visited the reservoir
 

Forest officials have instructed the public not to visit the reservoir area after 5 PM as animals may come there for water.
