Colombian authorities say they have arrested a 70-year-old German woman they accuse of hiring a right-wing criminal band to kill a man who stole money and jewellery from her.

Prosecutor Luis Gonzalez identified the woman arrested yesterday as Wilhelma Kredelbach, a Colombia resident for two decades.

Gonzalez told The Associated Press that Kredelbach apparently contacted members of the Urabenos, a criminal band engaged in drug trafficking and killings-for-hire, after the November burglary of her home in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta.

The prosecutor says the Urabenos killed one of the burglars.

He says Kredelbach was arrested along with 22 other people allegedly involved in the band and that she claims she is innocent. She could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted of crimes including murder.
