70-year old patient dies as ambulance hits lorry

A 70-year old patient died when an ambulance in which he was being shifted to a hospital rammed into a stationary lorry at Perundurai near here, police said today.

A doctor and four others, including the private ambulance driver, were injured in the mishap and had been hospitalised, they said.

The tragedy occurred past midnight yesterday at Vavikadai near Perundurai, about 20 km from here, when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to heavy rains.

Govindan, who was being shifted from Salem to a hospital in Coimbatore, about 100 km from here, died on the spot.

Dr Ranganathan, his assistant and two relatives of Govindan and the driver were injured, police said adding they had been admitted to hospitals in Erode and Coimbatore, where the condition of one person was stated to be serious.
