In a tragic incident, a 70-year- old woman, who was accompanying her ailing husband in an ambulance to a hospital, was among two persons killed when the vehicle rammed into a tractor in the district.

Kaliammal and the cleaner of the ambulance died on the spot while her 82-year old husband Sellappan escaped unhurt in the mishap that left six other relatives of the couple injured last night, police said today.

Sellappan of Kolathur village near Mettur in neighbouring Salem district, suffering from old age related ailments, was being brought to a private hospital here amid heavy rains.

The driver of the ambulance lost control due to slippery road conditions and rammed into a sugarcane-laden tractor near Varadhanallur village.

Six injured persons were admitted to the Government Hospital in Bhavani while Sellappan was taken to a private hospital.
