A 72-year-old woman has delivered a baby after 46 years of her marriage at a Hisar-based fertility centre.

The couple -- Mohinder Singh Gill (79) and his wife Daljinder Kaur -- were childless and decided to have a baby through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) three years ago.

"They (couple) came to us three years ago as they did not have a child even after several years of their marriage," Dr Anurag Bishnoi, owner of National Fertility and Test Tube Baby Centre said today.

"The first two attempts failed. But Daljinder conceived in third attempt last year," he told PTI over phone.

"The baby boy and mother are healthy," he said.

In IVF technique, eggs are collected from the woman's ovaries and then fertilised by husband's processed sperms in a test tube in a controlled laboratory environment. The resulting embryos are then deposited into the women's uterus.

Bishnoi said this is the second case in which a woman over 70 years of age has become a mother at the centre.

Earlier, Rajo Devi, a resident of Jind district in Haryana, had become mother through IVF at the age of 70 years in 2008.

Gill and his wife are feeling great at becoming parents at their age.

They have named the baby boy Armaan.

When asked about the feeling of having a baby at this age, she said, "People have different dreams but everything happens when god wants."

"I don't care about what people are going to say, the fact that I have been blessed with motherhood is more important," she said.

Daljinder said, "My husband and I never gave up hope of becoming parents."

When asked would it be difficult to bring up a child at this ripe old age, she said, "That thought never crossed my mind. God will take care of everything."

Daljinder said she earlier had miscarriages.
