The activists of '74 Chetana Manch today recalled the dark days of Emergency in 1975-77, recalling how democracy was throttled for a brief period before Jayaprakash Narayan thwarted "totalitarian dictatorship" through "total revolution."

"It has been 40 years since we saw those dark days as JP fought against totalitarian dictatorship through total revolution," Manch president Pramod Mishra said at a function here to mark JP's contribution in ending the Emergency.

Recalling his experiences after being lodged in Chhapra jail along with noted poet Nagarjun and several other activists of the JP movement after the Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, Mishra said the day would always remind political leaders against "taking such drastic steps against democracy."

Mishra said the Manch thanked Chief Minister Raghubar Das for agreeing to identify activists of JP movement from Jharkhand and give them monthly pension.

The Manch has been floated some years ago to remember the J P legacy.
