The Uttar Pradesh government today said that cane crushing has started in 75 sugar mills as compared to 37 mills last year.
"After directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for ensuring timely operation of sugar mills, Cane Department has succeeded in starting of cane crushing in 75 sugar mills whereas only 37 Sugar mills operated last year till this day," Commissioner Cane, Sanjay Bhoosreddy said.
"An action plan was made to ensure early operation of sugar mills in the crushing season 2017-18," he said.

Sugar mills crushed 54.98 lakh tonnes cane in current crushing season against 9.69 lakh tonnes last year till date.
"Sugar mills have produced more sugar also in the current season. Sugar production is 5.22 lakh tonnes against 0.83 lakh tonnes of last year till date. Sugar recovery trends are also better, the average sugar recovery of UP is 9.5 per cent against 8.5 per cent of last year till date," he added.
Due to early operation of Sugar mills farmers will be able to supply their cane timely to sugar mills on State Advisory Price and will also not be forced to sell their sugarcane on throw away price in the market which will be a step forward in the direction of doubling their income, aid Bhoosreddy.
He said that to check the menace of under weight and illegal procurement of cane, instructions have been issued to the departmental officers.
