A total of 78 villagers fell ill due to a suspected case of food poisoning on Monday, according to reports reaching district headquarters here today.

District health office's official spokesman Ajay Thackeray told PTI that the incident happened at a wedding related ceremony in Apti village on Sunday night, after food was served.

Among those affected include women, children and elders, the official said.

Some of the villagers complained of giddiness, vomitting, diahorrea and other complications after which they were rushed to a primary health centre where they were treated, he said.

He said that there was no casualty among patients and most of them were discharged after treatment.

However, the incident itself created a panic in the village which has a population of just over 800 people, he said.

The official stated that Food and Drug Administration officials rushed to the village and collected food samples for analysis.

The police visited the location and is in the process of registering an offence of negligence, he said.
