Additional Sessions Judge Anju Bajaj Chandna sentenced Shastri Nagar resident Babloo, dismissing his pleas for leniency and to release him on probation.
"I am of the view that it is not a fit case to grant benefit of probation in view of gravity of offence. Therefore, I sentence convict Babloo to rigorous imprisonment for seven years under section 397 (robbery) of the IPC," the judge said.
According to prosecution, Babloo, masquerading as a Sikh had entered the Shastri Nagar house of victim Babilta along with his accomplice Khatri on May 9, 2011, stating that they were MCD employees and needed to check water coolers and over head water tank for dengue larva.
Soon after Babita allowed to enter them her house, the duo held her and her children captive on knife point and asked her to hand over the valuables, it said.
"The complainant got injuries in the process. However, Babloo was apprehended at the spot itself, while Khatri managed to escape," the police told the court.
Babloo's counsel sought leniency saying he was the sole bread winner of his family and has to support aged parents and younger brother.
But the court rejected the plea, agreeing with the prosecution pleas that for imposition of severe punishment on him as such offences are on the rise in the society and it is essential that strong message is sent to the society against such offences.
