: Thirty six hours after he was kidnapped and a ransom demand made, an eight-year-old boy was rescued and a colleague of his father, a coir worker, arrested, police said here today.

They said Manjo, a third standard student, had been reported missing on Wednesday last after he went for a hair cut. Following this his father, a coir manufacturing unit worker, lodged a complaint with police.

Suspecting involvement of one of his colleagues, who was not seen at that time, police called him up and questioned him, following he reportedly confessed to having kidnapped the boy.

He also said he had demanded Rs 40,000 ransom for the boy's release and threatened the family with dire consequences if police were informed.

The father was told to come alone with the money to a particular spot, but the kidnapper changed the location every now and then so that police could not trace him.

However police traced his last call to Usilampatti in Madurai district, arrested him from his sister's house last night and rescued Manoj.
