An eight-year-old boy was mauled to death by a pet dog allegedly belonging to a local BJP leader who has been arrested in the case, police said.
According to police, in the incident which took place last night near the Verka Milk plant in the Ashok Vihar area here, the dog attacked the boy, identified as Dilkush, as he was returning home from a religious function along with his aunt.
Jalandhar DCP Paramjit Singh said that the dog dragged Dilkush to an open plot nearby and had left him grievously injured by the time locals could come to his rescue.

Singh said that following the incident, the dog's owner, Harkirat Toor, has been arrested and placed in 14 days' judicial remand by a local magistrate.
A case has been lodged against Toor under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC.
Sanjay Paswan, Dilkush's father, told police that he hails from Bhagalpur in Bihar and had come to the city to get his son admitted to a school here.
