A record 83 per cent said they expect to stay at home than go out to party, according to the poll of 2000 people.

Of those, 43 per cent will simply settle down on the sofa and watch a film with treats and snacks.

Another 38 per cent plan to have a meal and a bottle of wine, while 12 per cent will be hosting friends and family, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

The number planning to stay in on December 31st is up nearly a tenth on last year when a similar survey found that 74 per cent of Britons remained at home on New year's Eve.

Forty-four per cent of people surveyed by supermarket Morrisons for the latest poll said their main reasons for staying in this year were concerns about finances.

Those surveyed said they would expect to spent an average of 78.20 pounds if they went out for the night, including food, drink, travel and entrance price for clubs or events.

Almost half (49 per cent) said they believed New Year's Eve is about the company you keep rather than the place that you celebrate.

The rising popularity of dinner parties was also believed to another reason for the decline in people going out as many prefer to cook for friends than visit a pub or nightclub.

"We understand that budgets are a little tight this year. People want to enjoy celebrating what a great year 2012 has been with people they love and care about rather than worry about the dent on their wallet," Sonia Whiteley-Guest, from Morrisons, said.

Despite the great stay at home up to 250,000 revellers are expected to make it the central London's annual fireworks display that has become one of the world's most impressive New Year's Eve celebrations, the paper said.

At midnight, the fireworks will burst from the London Eye, exploding to a specially created musical soundtrack. After they conclude the crowds will be invited to participate in a mass rendition of Auld Land Syne.
